Car Battery Care in Wilmington, DE
Automotive batteries haven’t changed much in 80 years.
An automobile battery is comprised of a series of cells, each of which stores 2.1 volts; wired together in series, the cells store and deliver about 12.6 volts. Inside each cell is a lead plate, serving as a cathode; a sulfuric acid solution, acting as an electrolyte, and a lead plate covered with lead dioxide, acting as the anode. When the battery is discharging, a chemical reaction occurs where the acid reacts with the materials of the plates, changing them to lead sulfate. When the battery charges again, the chemical reaction is reversed and lead sulfate reforms into lead dioxide.
Just like any rechargeable battery, however, your battery can only withstand so many charge/discharge cycles before it starts to weaken. You’ve seen this with your phone, laptop, and tablet! Eventually, the battery can’t hold or deliver a charge anymore and will have to be replaced.
At Kirkwood Auto Center, we’ve got a whole lineup of top-brand batteries for your car and your engine, all at prices you’ll love. We also specialize in battery maintenance, including:
- Load testing your battery for reserve cranking power
- Checking your alternator, charging system and serpentine drive belt
- Cleaning the battery and tightening hold-down clamps
- Cleaning the posts, terminals, and cables for corrosion. Corrosion, a fluffy white deposit, can interfere with your battery’s ability to receive or deliver a charge
Today’s vehicles put a lot of strain on batteries. Between cranking a big engine and providing power for all the secondary electrical accessories, it’s no surprise that many batteries don’t last through their entire warranty phase. Also, bear in mind that extremes of heat and cold can be really hard on any automotive battery and can even shorten their life.
