Driveline Repair in Wilmington, DE
Drivelines should be evaluated at the initial sign of a problem. Kirkwood Auto Center does quality auto repair services in Wilmington, DE.
Driveline Maintenance and Service
Something has to be able to transmit torque from your engine and transmission to the wheels, and then to the road – and that’s your driveline.
For rear-wheel drive vehicles, that’s a tube that runs from the transmission to the rear axle and differential, with u-joints that can accommodate movement and bumps. Front-wheel-drive vehicles use two half-sized axles which go directly from the transmission to the front wheels, and CV joints help compensate for movement, bumps and the difference in wheel speeds as the vehicle turns a corner.
Usually, these systems are good for the life cycle of the vehicle, but not always!
For a rear-wheel-drive vehicle, signs of driveline problems include:
- Clunk when putting vehicle in gear
- Clunk when stepping on the gas pedal or letting off the gas pedal
- Roughness and vibration
Front-wheel-drive problems include:
- Chattering or ratcheting sound while turning in one direction but not the other
- Leak of oil from near front wheels
- Oil spattered on front wheels
- Clunk while accelerating or letting off gas pedal
CV joints tend to be more problematic than rear-wheel-drive driveline setups. CV joints are enclosed in bellows-shaped rubber boots; if that boot starts to separate or tear, it can allow road grit and moisture into the bearings of the CV joint itself, accelerating wear and leading to premature failure. A failed CV joint can lead to the half-axle thrashing around and doing a lot more damage to other engine components…a scenario you do not want to see happen!
